THEATER

Hair
HAIR-civic-theatre

Through Oct. 23. The 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival was a mega-hit on Broadway and is now touring to San Diego. Hair’s groundbreaking rock score paved the way for some of the greatest musicals of our time. A product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. This free-love musical contains brief nudity and is for mature audiences only. Civic Theatre, 1100 Third Avenue, San Diego. 619.570.1100. www.sandiegotheatres.org

The Glass Menagerie
the-glass-menagerie-cygnet-

Through Nov. 13. The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams’ most deeply personal and haunting play. Amanda, a Southern belle, is abandonded by her husband and is left to raise their two children, Tom and Laura. Tom works in a warehouse, doing his best to support his family. Amanda is obsessed with finding a suitor for Laura, who spends most of her time with her collection of little glass animals. When Tom brings home an acquaintance from work, Amanda hopes will be the long-awaited suitor for Laura. As the story of lost dreams, family bonds and survival unfolds, it is clear nothing goes as Amanda had hoped. Cygnet Theatre in Old Town, 4040 Twiggs St., Old Town, 619.337.1525. www.cygnettheatre.com

Somewhere
somewhere-old-globe

Through Oct. 30. This poignant new play is about one family’s attempt to make its fantasy a reality. Gorgeous dance sequences are woven throughout the play and help to tell the story of Inez Candelaria and her three children’s dream of a life in show business. With their building scheduled for demolition and their life together beginning to crumble, the filming of the movie of West Side Story on the streets of their soon to be abandoned neighborhood finally brings reality into focus. White Theatre at the Old Globe, 1363 Old Globe Way, Balboa Park. 619.234.5623. www.theoldglobe.org
