abstract-classicistsCalifornia Hard-Edge Painting Exhibit

Taken from Laguna Art Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibit provides a cohesive glimpse into California’s abstract classicist movement.

In 1959, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art ran a seminal exhibition titled Four Abstract Classicists featuring the work of Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, Frederick Hammersly and John McLaughlin. This summer, Laguna Art Museum presents Abstract Classicists to honor their influence on California’s hard-edge. In addition to the four original artists, the exhibit features works by Florence Arnold and Helen Lundeberg who also made significant contributions to the abstract scene in California. Referred to as the purists of painting by art critic Jules Langsner, the abstract classicists demonstrated an intuitive and economic approach to form while maintaining a sensitivity and playfulness with color. Collectively, the group expanded the possibilities of the abstract art form. Guests can examine the works of art on the upper level of the museum through Oct. 28. 307 Cliff Drive, Laguna Beach, 949.494.8971. lagunaartmuseum.org
