Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg: Rodin

EifmanInTextWest Coast premiere of artistic director and choreographer Boris Eifman’s Rodin arrives in Orange County.

Since 1977, Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg has been exploring the depths of the human psyche through dance. It is the complex entangling of relationships, the volatile brew of emotions fueling them and their tragic outcome that provided material for Rodin, which will debut at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts May 3-5, for its West Coast premier.

Boris Eifman is hailed as one of Russsia’s greatest living choreographers and has always sought to probe the inner lives of his subjects. With Rodin, he explores the life of French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), his turbulent relationship with his mistress and muse, Camile Claudel, and the price of artistic genius. Dancers inhabit the sensuality of shape and form as this tumultuous story unfolds, becoming sculpted works of art and masses of clay. The work, marking the company’s 35th anniversary, is set to the coloristic music of Rodin’s fellow Parisians, Camille Saint-Saëns, Jules Massenet and Maurice Ravel.
