Even though I-phones and droids have map functions that enable driving and walking directions, sometimes there’s nothing better than a good, old-fashioned LA map that won’t redirect you to any number of ads – or worse, lose its satellite capacity. What maps don’t include (but many phones do offer) is an overview of traffic, but a lot of traffic headaches can be avoided by following some basic rules. Avoid major highways during commuter hours (7-9AM and 4-6PM). Look for arterial surface streets to traverse instead – like Venice Blvd (which runs east to west) as well as Fairfax Avenue (which runs North to South). 11th street is a favorite alternate to Lincoln Blvd (which runs north/south and parallel to the shore but is often congested).
